Side note/question: Why do clans group neutrals, knowing that the neutrals will get highlighted for doing so...even those that arent being actively recruited? I actually am asking so I can get an understanding.

    Q.
  8. manlyman · 8 Mar 2006
For rank groups, I suppose the implicit disclaimer would be "you rank with us at your own risk". The neutral enjoys some fast ranks, and the clan gets a helping hand.
  9. pablo · 8 Mar 2006
I personally think it's dumb and boring; it's why i didn't post when i pk'd afk darius with 10 rgb on when he was holding Ochre for cr, although that log is more interesting... right after kloot lots of goblins swarmed in and i didn't have a recall.. had to flee and run like no tomorrow! :)
  10. thesean · 8 Mar 2006
what kind of clans are we talking about? are we talking about clans at war or "neutral" clans? if it's "clans at war" then I think the clans are just using whoever they can to accomplish what they want/need and don't really care about the consequences of their actions. if it's just neutral clans then they are doing the same thing but there really aren't any consequences for the grouping...
  11. patrick · 9 Mar 2006
Nobody forces a nuetral to do anything, they choose to group. If they are high level and see BSP titles and join group and have no idea what the consequences are then they are LONG overdue for a brutal lesson in the reality of arctic, I dont feel it is any clan's responsibility to instruct people on the finer points of arctic's politics. If you can get a char to rank and cant figure out the deal around here then you are an idiot anyways

Back in the day before Arctic's pbase got brutally raped (by the slew of better games) into the small number we have today, people zoned with whomever, whenever, and clan never really cared. Over the past years people have become much more paranoid and now kill anything and everything they see in a group with an enemy. The end result is you either have people grouping with neutrals and running medicore zones 90% of the time, or people join/form a clan, and run semi decent stuff until someone else wardecs them for the shinies, or you get bored/hunted and forced to join a clan, or just quit for awhile or for good.

Clans being less highlight horny will probably never happen, and the result will be people having to join clans and flat out avoid grouping with chunks of the playerbase, limited what they can do, boring the shit out of them and making the number of players get smaller and smaller.

There's going to be alot of pissed off newbies if that Arctic zMUD button sees heavy use once its added.

well i dont know what mud you were playing, but i also started playing around that time, and i remember seeing wild and bsp letting their soloers group with each other without the fear of getting ambushed. and if an accident did occur where the "enemy" char got killed while grouped, the eq was returned and even tho 1x didnt mean anything, exp was regained for them

Relentless has maintained a very good working relationship with BSP and will continue to do so. I'd like to mention that 1 person's view does not carry the entire weight of the clan behind. Mavlad if there are any issues you would like to talk to me about at any time feel free to contact me. I have always had an open policy of communications and have worked hard to keep all sides content with the situation.

Maybe people just didn't like you? I never got any heat for years while grouping with BSP/Wild/Renshai/Whatever, and for awhile I grouped with Tom(Tubbs) almost daily and never god any shit from people for it. Clans might've kept an eye on people but it sure as hell wasn't today's:

It's still not that way. . . It takes a lot to become a highlight . . . Only 1 or 2 people in BSP are any more highlight happy then the rest (and they don't get to make clan highlights)
  20. Manu · 10 Mar 2006
Just to sum it up - I've offered you an extremely opposite point in which people are slaughtered by association since the time being. Yours was a kind of "the grass was greener". The truth is somewhere beyond, fine? Let's make it in between - I agree that lately the highlighting without a good reason has become more common a practice compared to the years before, and you should consider agreeing to the fact that the past was never the kindergarten which everybody likes to describe.
  21. Matthew · 10 Mar 2006
When i go back through logs and remember times i honestly get a real gut feeling that rampant highlighting started around the wipe i met Mavlad. I was always mostly a neutral until then and never ever got heat for grouping anyone. The only time i was not a neutral was the whole HAIL TAKHISIS thing we did to excuse our randoming. Then i joined RoT and then Renshai. It was probably around the time Chris convinced Renshai to retaliate against BSP for some extremely minor slight.
  22. mavlad · 10 Mar 2006
rampant highlighting started for me 4 wipes ago when rgb attacked me for grouping with loretta

    it's all rgb fault so!

Rorc It takes a lot to become a highlight . . . Only 1 or 2 people in BSP are any more highlight happy then the rest (and they don't get to make clan highlights)

It doesn't take much to get highlighted. Last wipe when Mavlad attacked me it was the day I had come back froma break and I had run 1, maybe 2 zones with rgb/garbage.

RGB this wipe likes to highlight after 2 or more groupings with BSP.

Funny how clans never seem to mind when you group and help their 'unknowns', though. ;)

Manu- As far as highlighting for grouping with another clan goes, the past was a kindergarden compared to the present. I'd take the increased randomers of the past in exchange for the less-nutty highlighting we have today. Was alot easier to deal with some mid-level idiot than restrict yourself from zoning with a larger portion of the MUD. Any guilt by association came much less often then than now. I remember killing some renshai my 1st wipe because people in my group were saying how it was a randomer, so I agreed to help kill it. After I died a quick death 10 minutes after we killed it, everything was sorted, and they even got me a new enchanted solamnic 2 hander so I could regain lvl 17 or whatever the hell I delvled from. This wipe, a newbie who helps kill some clanned person is going to be hunted with extreme prejudice and probably end up quitting.

Like I said before. That zMUD button is going to create alot of pissed of new(and then about 10 seconds later former) Arctic players.
  24. Oleg · 10 Mar 2006
I do not remember when exactly rampant highlight did start (surely in 97-98 it was not that strict). However the same discussion already took place (probably many time) 2-3 wipes ago, when I was still active on Arctic. Since nothing did change during the 3 years, I doubt it can change at all. Arctic became thing in itself, with the same playersbase of 200-300 adicts, thus any new uknown character has to be either friend or enemy or a "third sort" clan member, who would not group with warring clans by any case.
  25. johnny · 10 Mar 2006
I played a long time ago, was in a clan, and did some pkilling. We didn't kill by association, we just killed anyone who had equipment we wanted.

  26. haley · 10 Mar 2006
So it's officially Mavlad's fault then? Hehehe.
  27. houja · 11 Mar 2006
Just to add to the discussions: I succeeded in getting both RGB and BSP to hunt me. Both clans claim im with either side, so where does that leave me?
Btw Mavlad should post the log of him killing me, its great stuff :(

  31. Shesh · 11 Mar 2006
Ah once again BSPs are spinning the nets of their spiteful political propaganda... no Mavlad I killed you first for attacking my good friend Tim, grouping with Loretta only made your nature clear.

As to highlighting by association, ambushes and traps, props go to Kimmo who revolutionized Arctic pk with, erm, scientific approach. I would say he reached major influence at about 5th wipe.
  32. yair · 11 Mar 2006
I was wondering why the finns were not mentioned.
I agree with Shesh, its all the finns fault!
  33. marq · 11 Mar 2006
I'm sure *most* neutrals have a clue before they do join some clan group to zone, the problem comes when that neutral is seen with a clangroup and gets highlighted by association. I'd say its smart as a clan to group that neutral to help zone but in the end it simply makes it look like that clan has tons more players than they actually have.

I've found myself ceasing my highlighting for several weeks at a time simply because it was too much to keep up with when my enemy would group so many people. The problem is now all it does is get that neutral pk'd then they join the enemy, simply justifying the killing from the beginning.

Would it be too far fetched for there to be a non_grouping of neutrals for warring clans to keep the innocent ones out of it? Especially since most 'clans' on arctic should have enough players to do whatever they want without adding neutrals. If not, I only see this as a problem that will continue to tilt the game so to speak.

    Q.
  34. jorake · 11 Mar 2006
If neutrals arent smart enough to know who BSP, or RGB is and that they war pretty much every wipe. Then they dont need to be playing. I dont think it should be up to the major clans to inform neutrals that they will get hunted for grouping. Its a risk they take on their own. And its not like we put a gun to their head and make them come. If we need a few people for a zone and we shout it dont look like Shakar shouts 'need few for zone. if you tell to me you come or die!' dont blame the warring clans for the dumb neutrals actions.

  39. Ninda · 12 Mar 2006
How do you figure you aren't in part responsible? Some people play this game strictly for pk. When one side of a war refuses to fight ever there is a big section of players who don't want to stick around to just zone. You know as well as I do that if your side would grow some balls and fight more people on both sides would find the motivation to log.

  44. marq · 12 Mar 2006
I dont think we "refuse to fight ever", shit happens and people quit, but blaming us for your boredom doesn't quite make sense. If you want to pk...pk each other, its a game so its not like it would harm anything. Same way as people do in recreational sports, they play on opposite teams without needing a 'hatred' motive to jump start it.

Contrary to the propaganda, you don't have to find a reason to hate somebody you're pkilling. As an answer why not just go with the numbers you have instead of constantly recruiting? Instead of saying you dont have enough #s to zone so you shout....why not try to do the zones with whatever numbers you have at the time?

If your fun is predicated on fighting only people you hate, then you're probably never gonna have fun here. I personally like fighting you guys but the biggest thing I've hated over the years is how your #s have been. Not to be read as a complaint, just my personal issue. Anyways, those people that want to pk can still do so if they really wanted to. You guys have enough people to spread around I'm sure.

    ....That Really did HURT!

    Q.
  45. Ninda · 12 Mar 2006
We really dont have the numbers everyone pretends we have. Sure we could pk each other but its not fun to fight for no winnings. There is no thrill or adrenaline in fighting one of your allies and not looting their eq once you win. (or losing yours when you lose) Anyways, we do make do on alot of zones on less #s, but those of us left like to do the high end fights, and you can't do them on less than 10 buff chars.

    Back to the former subject...
How can neutrals know who are in BSP when I, as an "enemy" of BSP doesnt know who is in your clan anymore.
I guess this concept applies to other clans but to a lesser extent.
Leaving neutrals out of clan wars will do Arctic good. I know Outlaws tried and mostly suceeded with this concept and we will try next wipe too.
  48. pablo · 13 Mar 2006
aah more whining about numbers.. we can barely form 10 with only BSP.. is it really such a bad thing to _offer_ not _threaten_ neutrals to do some efficient zoning from now and then?

About outlaws never "zoning with neutrals" is really hard to believe.. if the outlaw core always had that philosophy and never zoned with neutrals even when they was in bsp thats not true! i've zoned with mika and the finncrew quite a few before i joined my current clan. I must say it was really fun.. specially because of Phred's intervention opening hatch of youknowwhat and accidentally dt'ing Myttwo :) Oh and Jeppe and Andreas were neutral once before joining no?

P.S.: yes yes, im not saying we're the only ones that zone efficiently, just saying that any clan zones better in average than random people forming a group through chat channel.

Do you think we're talking about we're *not* grouping neutrals in "Outlaws" based on how things were run in BSP? but still as a rule I never zone with neutrals, if I'm leading (that applies to the time before we split also), unless the character in question is a recruit.

Funny enough that the ppl who bring up the number issue is yourself and dont tell me you offer spots in zoning groups for the benefit of the neutrals!!! that just cracks me up haha

Andreas was BSP before split of Outlaws/BSP
Outlaws didnt group anyone else because from my understanding Outlaws are all just a bunch of friends and if they werent a friend they wouldnt be zoning with them. Jeppe was a friend of an Outlaw.

I did do a few zones with Outlaws before I joined BSP too but I think we were the exception rather than the rule.

Problems for a clan do not surface simply from a lack of numbers. Since there is no set rule for clanning in Arctic, trust and loyalty become huge factors determining the success of the clan.

Doesn't matter if they're doing it to benefit the neutral. The fact is for neutrals, it gives us a group to work with that is alot better run than the random assortment of people normally thrown together. Its also a way of running better zones than normal (I don't recall the last time I did frosty with neutrals(last wipe test scouts excluded), or even storms, without something going horribly wrong.

The way highlighting goes these days you'd think the MUD had an excess of players. Right now, you have clans, and neutrals. As long as those neutrals aren't highlighted, they'll group with anyone. Once they get highlighted, they're going to probably end up grouping with everyone except the people who highlighted them, thus hurting the ability to use neutrals to fill zoning groups by said clan.
  53. marq · 13 Mar 2006
If there was a way to distinguish between recruit and neutral char filling a slot then this probably wouldnt be an issue, but then again if a neutral zoned with a group for a while, they'd more than likely be recruited. This only creates a problem for the clans that aren't currently on top because neutrals definitely WANT to be around the big clan that's zoning tons, and of course they avoid being associated with the 'lesser' clans so as to not be highlighted by the big guys. My guess is that the only way to fix this is by having some system thru the clans where people knew how to identify a true neutral.

As for whining about numbers, I apologize if it sounded that way. I was just attempting to give reason as to why it makes it harder to fight you. Grouping neutrals is fine, but when I see a group led by an opposing clan, consisting of mostly previously highlighted enemies, sprinkled with 1 or 2 chars I dont recognize, I do what most of us do, I highlight them. Sucks, but its what probably will happen until somebody can come up with a solution. Any suggestions? No bullshit...
  54. pablo · 13 Mar 2006
Again, neutrals joining warring clan groups at their own risk is not bad and why would there be a system to stop the "highlighting" of them. They know the risks, they know the rewards.

How else could an "evolutioned" neutral guy join a clan? Real life friendship all over the world? How did first arctic clans get founded... just by playing, chatting, having fun together and enjoying this game.
  55. manlyman · 13 Mar 2006
You don't have to kill a suspected enemy associate if he is zoning during your time. It's not like he could hurt you then. Just account for him during the enemy zoning time, or the overlap. Know his class and equip set.
  56. Daniil · 13 Mar 2006
Pablo "aah more whining about numbers.. we can barely form 10 with only BSP.. is it really such a bad thing to _offer_ not _threaten_ neutrals to do some efficient zoning from now and then? "

Well we always had such problems with numbers, but that never was a reason to group some neutrals, because we understand, once you groupped with us, you will be hunted by our enemy and we dont really want such action against neutrals.
So we dont play much and have fun on our IRC instead of MUD :)

  57. ddog · 13 Mar 2006
mavlad: that really makes our people want to play!
the rest: why dont you all just form a big clan since all you seem to do is hug trees and dance?
mud: im not playing it because i simply got bored of it, after i-dont-want-to-know how many years
  58. mavlad · 13 Mar 2006
    yep mud is boring atm
none forced finns to abuse anger and got themselves deleted after we had tons fun at the battles at w from kalaman and que kul. we didn't have stun and much more numbers by that time.
daniil: keep having fun of chatting in irc, i prefer to play.
  59. James · 14 Mar 2006
Yes, neutrals know the risks/rewards of grouping warring clans, but would it be feasible for the clans to work together somewhat on this? Can a leader of the clan send a quick msg to leader of the other clan daily/every couple days/whatever makes sense, and just say "Hey we grouped Bob/Tony/Enrique today but they're not recruits, just neutrals who wanted some fun zoning." ? And then allow those neutrals to stay neutral and just group to learn the game with clanned players who know it?

Perhaps the more important question is: Would clans be agreeable to this?

If nothing else, look at it this way. Allowing neutrals to group whomever, and looking PAST the fact that they're probably helping your enemies eq/rank/etc benefits those of you who want more pk in the long run. You end up with more neutrals who get better at the game, and maybe form their own clan or join enemy side. End result? Maybe a bigger chance to have more enemies to have fun fights with, and not only small skirmishes rarely.

    Edited: Ficksed my sppeling.

Because I cant understand what you can do 15 hours every day :))))))))))))
  61. Ninda · 14 Mar 2006
A solution like that would not work. Mostly because clans lie about who is unknown and such. It would get abused letting their unknowns stay unknown as 'nuetrals'. Hell, members of outlaw (jarrad) have went so far as to invent a second identity, name, backstory and tried to join our clan. We really couldn't trust them saying who is nuetral and who is just some unknown.

edit: I'm sure they wouldn't trust us to do it either.

    haha so true
  63. patrick · 14 Mar 2006
If enemies would just show up and fight instead of running and hiding all the time then nuetrals would not die as much, trust me.
  64. Jarrad · 14 Mar 2006
There is no benefit to neutrals by grouping with a warring clan if they wish to stay neutral, the end result is they get hunted by said clans enemy which leads to them attempting to become a recruit of the clan they zoned with. This then results in them starting on the bottom rung in the clan they join which translates to zoning fodder who receive left over eq that established members have no need for.

The main problem with the arctic player base is that exploring is dead. "Clan leaders" can lead basically every zone on the mud quickly and efficiently, and any new player who wishes to learn and explore will find it almost impossible unless he tries to form his own clan, which is also near impossible due to the lack of new players in the first place.

However, warring clans grouping neutrals and shouting on the mud "please come join us" are both situations that can easily be exploited by their enemies, particularly so this wipe due to the ease of leveling a character to 30, as I am currently proving.

You only discovered my first infiltration attempt I am sorry to inform you, I currently have 2 seperate identities in your clan and I'm next in line for tent and stun. Thanks!

    PS: Shells rule.

I have the perfect solution!, drop group limit to 8 i have been sayin it for years!
  66. mavlad · 15 Mar 2006
perfect solution to buff bsp more, neutrals would stop spamming dragons with a bunch of naked scouts

    >> I thought you knew as well as I, that we moved to WoW ....euro server - Balnazzar, horde - come get us!<<

So you guys ended up in WoW as well... not suprised. Fun game for quite long, recently started a break though. Guild management were jerks about attendance %'s so it started feeling more like going to work just to stay in guild.

Too bad we didn't all end up the same server!

    Anyone on Azjol-Nerub Euroserver?
Since my switch from Arctioc to WoW I haven't missed arctic a single day besides missing the great people I have met here (Wheeeee!)...
