actually, i think pat killed him only because he stole his old name!

Because obviously the way to get your enemy clans to battle you with some fun clan battle action is to oppress them and their friends and anyone else from ever grouping so that they eventually stop playing.

just for the record i play zrefe, its a lvl 6 spy char that never grouped anyone
  6. patrick · 15 Aug 2005
For the record: There is not a single highlight on the BSP lists that has been added by myself. In fact only a handful of people add the highlights, and contrary to hysterical propaganda, people are not highlighted at random. All I do is hunt red highlights sent to me.
  7. Raf · 15 Aug 2005
Well time to sack the guy who highlighted him. Obviously failing miserably to identify a simple neutral guy. Who had the misfortune of picking a name used by someone else in the past being his only crime.
  8. Brafu · 15 Aug 2005
I don't know who robillard is or what his story might be, but attacking someone just for grouping with a known enemy is perfect a scum tactic if I have ever seen one. Clans may not like it but the simple fact is that neutrals group with your enemies all the time and if you decide to hunt them again this wipe then you only prove that your entire clan is nothing more than a organized bunch of weak trash.

Kinda like what terrorists do all the time.... Target the weakest people in a society to punish and terrorize the armed forces of that society.
  9. Chris C · 15 Aug 2005
Clans have always made it clear that if you gruop their enemies, you are accepting the risk that you might be whacked at any time without ntoice. This isn't some new phenomenon. I can't see why this doesn't make sense, even in a real life setting.

There's some resemblance, mainly because both strategies work, are very popular in war, and are used by all sides. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

"attacking someone just for grouping with a known enemy". They're known. They're enemies. You should know what you're getting into when you group with them. Most of BSP is titled BSP so neutrals won't make that mistake. Most of outlaws aren't titled outlaw. Some title themselves BSP for some reason.
  15. Raf · 15 Aug 2005
People zoned freely with clans while keeping their neutrality early on arctic. As long as they didn't help in pk you did not automatically get highlighted as evil.

Some people practiced suspect highlighting or simply because they liked random killing but it was never a wide clan policy in those days.

I remember helping cr some shriners in mystic and zoning with a few of them on occasion and at the same time zoning with their enemies brotherhood/black dragons.
  16. nol · 15 Aug 2005
Those were different times. We have seen too many instances of clans using the guise of neutrality as a weapon.
  17. patrick · 15 Aug 2005
Once again: It is not OUR fault for killing nuetrals who group with you people, its YOUR fault for using them to help you in zones when you KNOW they will be hunted. Now our players actually PLAY so we rarely if ever need help for anything from nuetrals, but believe me the times we have had help it has been made EXPLICITLY clear the dangers of grouping with us.

If you people really gave a shit about the nuetrals you wouldnt group them, or you would warn them what happens. If you do warn them then they understand the risks and take them knowingly. Either way, find somewhere else to spread your bullshit, trust me we dont care
  18. Brafu · 15 Aug 2005
The simple fact is that this is a game and doesn't mean jack, but most of the clan populace treats it as if its life and death where ANYTHING goes because their very lives are at stake. You CHOOSE to hunt people who you KNOW for a FACT want no part in any war and then you blame it on the necessities of war.

The only people at fault are those who CHOOSE to hunt down people who only play this game to zone. You can blame the otherside for grouping them all you want, but the fact is that you are the ones who commit the actual act. And you could safely ignore them and it wouldn't affect the war in any real way.

I'm not pointing the finger at any one clan, but I don't like it when fools try and play the "Its their own fault" card when it comes to neutrals being hunted. Plus I doubt anyone could point out one instance where having a few neutrals to help with a zone, managed to turn the tide in a clan war that wasn't already decided long before by other factors.
  19. patrick · 15 Aug 2005
Brafu dont be an idiot. If people didnt want any part of a war they shouldnt associate with clan people period.
  20. Rurh · 15 Aug 2005
Yeah screw actually playing the game.
  21. Manu · 15 Aug 2005
brafu, i havent seen a comment of a kind from you, when two neutrals, namely grem and aahz, were killed for grouping bsp. basically, they were forced into bsp.
this highlight system is not an invention of bsp and has a long and bloody history in arctic. sometimes its not enforced, but dont pretend its not here.
you, scumpiglet, squeal only when bsp is responsible for something, anything. quaff some poison and die, boardwhore whiner.

that's about the most stupid thing i ever read in this forum, congratulations.
  25. Seq · 15 Aug 2005
The problem is it's impossible to distinguish harmless groupers with unknown enemies. As far as I can tell there is one viable solution to that problem and that is to strictly and unfailingly enforce titling rules (every character that will ever fight with the clan is titled that particular clan). Obviously this hasn't quite happened with the big clans yet; but it seems like there's been improvement by BSP in this area. The thing about enforcing titling rules is it benefits EVERYBODY; neutrals could group clans without fear and clanned people could play unknown/peaceful characters that never participate in fights against the enemy. Alllll it takes is the initiative to do this and the strength to enforce it, and everyone wins.
  26. Arne · 15 Aug 2005
I have no clue who Robillard is, nor if he is indeed a BSP enemy or not. But he was highlighted for grouping Zrefe. How can you assume that a sub 25 char is a known enemy for the entire mud? Many clanmembers use neutrals to level up newly rolled characters, and even continue to do so while the enemy knows they are such and such clan.

I have grouped a few outlaw and BSP this wipe while they were still unknowns, also to me. I found out that BSP highlighted me for that (no longer so fortunately) while I specifically asked these people if they were clanned or not when I grouped them and they denied. I came off clean by stating who I was and beig semi known to both clans, but a relatively new neutral probably would not have been so lucky and would have been PKed by both clans for doing nothing wrong.

How can you prevent this? I have no answers, only that it is NOT the neutrals fault.

  30. patrick · 15 Aug 2005
Manu: Thank you for stating the obvious, but often ignored.

As far as clan titling goes, when the wipe started and Addict clan was forming Zack(addiction leader) came to me concerned that his new clan would accidently be attacked in crossfire of war. To avoid this we agreed that _every_ member of Addicts would title loud and clear who they were. Results were pretty damn good. I dont believe a single titled addict was ever killed by bsp.

People like brafu bring up ridiculous points that are nothing more than pot shots at bsp. Hey, when your on the top your gonna have people trying to bring you down we look past this. But if you guys care about the nuetrals maybe we can work out a strict Titling policy to cut down on some wrongful deaths. If you guys really enforced it I wouldnt be against giving it a shot
  31. patrick · 15 Aug 2005
Contrary to popular propaganda I don't enjoy killing helpless nuetrals. A tip to all you nuetrals out there, if you are killed wrongfully, instead of reacting like a total asshole with swears and threats. Just identify who your known nuetral multies are, and your eq will be returned by bsp 100% of the time. When you refuse to identify who you are or just swear and give typical FUCK YOU BSP YOU RANDOMING ASSHOLES rants, dont expect to be treated so good? And please dont start with..."how can I not be pissed I just died and lost all xp blah blah" The xp tables are easy as pie and pk death xp loss is nothing. Mistakes happen we know this. If you make us aware who you are you will get your eq back and prolly then some for apolagy.

  34. Heo · 16 Aug 2005
This is an absolutely ridiculous thread. Outlaws, wild, and RGB highlight anyone seen grouping with BSP regularly. I know this because a neutral guy I was testing something with was killed a couple days ago.

I find it pretty amusing you can get so incredibly self righteous while being so amazingly hypocritical. Shut up you morons, jesus. Killing suspect highlights is a key part of war for a number of reasons. One, by allowing neutrals to group with enemy, you give them the power to do higher zones, which let's them zone more, get better eq, and up their morale. Second, by not monitoring potential unknowns, you get the problem of unknown char ambushes as has happened multiple times as well. We highlighted Bezinka for roughly the same reasons, and low and behold, we were right.

As to back in the day, yes, back in the day it may have happened, but Arctic has evolved since that and clan warfare evolved with it. Don't kid yourselves, BSP or Wildlaws would shred the shriners of old. Why? Because clan warfare is now down to a science pretty much, with very little wiggle room.
  35. muffymouse · 16 Aug 2005
Not that I really care too much about the issue here, but poor Robillard. I do find one of Patricks comments kinda funny. The one which blames wildlaw or whatever for actions that they as a clan do. Thats like blaming the makers of the Matrix movie for the Colmbine(sp) massacre or makers of GTA for that dude who killed that one cop or even worse, the subway bombings in London which are the exact same scenario(some extremist group warning England previously and blaming them for the bombs).

You can have your own rules which you play by(kill by association) and thats cool and all but just because the other team does not wish to play by your particular rules does not mean that it is their fault for some action. In my opinion, any false highlights are the clan who does the killings fault, but then again, I'm one of those old fashion guys who thinks if you can't remember the name of your enemy, then they are not worthy to be in that position.

I do agree with Patricks post about clans and titling. If people always titled their characters who are in clans, then maybe this pre-emptive striking would at least be reduced a little.

These are my opinions, I don't expect anyone to care.
  36. muffymouse · 16 Aug 2005
    In response to Heo's message:

Personally I think it would be better off if unknowns and neutrals were allowed to group with clans. Why? Because for the reasons that Heo mentioned, one clan will get more eq and will get higher moral. This will lead to more fighting.

Pking is great fun, nothing beats winning a large scale battle. The common problem now is that these battles are very rare. Unknowns are always getting beat up making their leveling slower(but thats about it) and clan members on either side get picked off in solo fights. Woo hoo.

Everyone is scared to loose their eq and will only zone during peak times because of this. Personally I think there would be more fighting if there was in turn more zoning. Who am I to say anything though being that I am not in either of these two clans at the moment.
  37. Kalis · 16 Aug 2005
I'll be honest. If I were head of the top clan, or some clan getting to the top, I would use exactly the same tactics to keep ahead of other clans. In real war, its not always about the huge battles a la Lord of the Rings, but about cutting off supply lines, using information to isolate and destroy small groups and fight when you have the best advantage. Cleary these tactics are effective, as BSP enjoys a very strong position in the game right now, and acceptable, because many clans have acted similarly, now and in past wipes, and no immortals have intervened. Still, its pretty silly to complain that your enemies wont man up and face you 12 v 12 when you actively work to limit their ability to do so.
  38. Brafu · 16 Aug 2005
I'm just bitter from what BSP did last wipe, and as such maybe my anger is spilling over into this wipe. But I firmly believe that killing someone just for grouping with a enemy is pure ignorance even if it is a valid war time tactic. This is a damn GAME for god sakes, its not nesseccary to always take shit to the extreme just to win. Most neutrals will not even see a high end zone for many years so just allow them to have some fun with a clan group. What you fail to realize is that if YOU allow neutrals to group with the enemy then I'm sure you could get THEM to do the same for neutrals who group with you. It would help both clans and in return both sides would be able to have allot more fighting with main chars instead of having to lvl up unknowns so they can run zones and conduct ambush's.

Everyone just takes this damn game too serious and as a result we are going to have a new, and fairly harsh, pk system that will totally screw any clan that hunts unknown's. Maybe if you fools get off your ass and think about what I just said then maybe Aristox will reconsider the creation of the new pk system.
  39. doobie · 16 Aug 2005
before i stopped playing i approached michi/tino with an idea to deal with precisely this.

basically we would ask outlaws and rgb to title their respective clan names. bsp on the other hand would strictly restrict themselves to killing known enemies and inform the neutral populace that they can feel free to group with enemies and not be highlighted. we're trying to take the first step to improve the highlighting system. we accepted the fact that the scummiest clan (Rgb) would probably not do this and outlaws may still have tried some unknown hits, but it was agreed between the three of us that it was overall a huge benefit to the mud's neutral population to take this step. to put it succinctly, for perhaps one of the first times on arctic we were making a hefty decision not for the clan but for arctic as a whole.

welllllllllll long story short after we agreed to this we all ended up quitting, but im posting this in case perhaps another clan leader out there who is almost as amazing/perfect/handsome as me is willing to try to sort out the kinks in their own clan and adopt this.

you may lose some gear this way, but you'll have the muds respect and you'll be a helluva lot more honorable than everyone else.

    sincerely,
    god
  40. deoph · 16 Aug 2005
Stop thinking of it as war and start thinking of arctic as... a game! You pk because you like pk, these tactics will ruin the fun pk you like because you don't allow your enemy the chance to get confident enough for a 10 vs. 10 and you do these things because you are bored (same reason you random) not because you are certain killing some mage in trash eq (enemy or no) will furthur your cause either way. When you think of this as a winner take all war you are forgetting there can never be a winner, only someone with the upper hand. These scum tactics do not allow you to keep the upper hand they simply piss people off (as you can very well see) BOTH clans do it, (yair knows what I am talking about), and both clans are doing it because they are bored or eager to have some victory. If you like those big spammy 10 on 10 battles where it's hard to even know what is going on and over in 7 rounds then this is the wrong way to go about encouraging them.

You must be new, I grouped warring clans all the time back when I was new, as did many others, and I wasnever attacked for it. The kill-all-who-group IS a new tactic, regardless of what you may think.

Also, I wouldn't worry about RGB much, Loretta seems to like to burn bridges, so he'll probably be the only one left eventually.

I never got the bad rap RGB's name brings until last wipe seeing Garbage decay, orginal memeers leaving, and spots being filled by rgb members, and then the bullshit Loretta gave me, always thinking I was a traitor. this coming from the man(?) who quit on us in the middle of a war, and got me dragged into his fight with BSP, only to nolonger be welcome in that irc because I joined a clan thatmy limited playtime and the timezone i'm in, made it better for me than Garbage was.

In short, watching this war has no downside for me, it'd be like watching Hilary Clinton fight Ted Kennedy to the Death. Just can't be upset nomatter who wins/loses.

As I posted before: 2 (or 3?) wipes ago it was very possible to zone with wild or bsp as a non-clanmember. I did so many times as a titled Myth and learned some new zones that way (thanks michi!). A couple of times I had to talk to the enemy of the clan I zoned with to sort things out, but mostly people were not targeted. Then things changed... More neutrals were getting highlighted and I never zoned with bsp or wild again. Last wipe I was zoning with both Renshai and Garbage until it became too much of a hassle to tell them I was not interested in their war every single day. And I had to make them unhighlight me about once every two weeks. This wipe I don't even bother and zone with my own clan or solo only just to avoid all this shit. And even then I heard I was highlighted by BSP this week, and earlier in the wipe by outlaw.

I enjoy the mud very much still, but those old days were so much less complicated from a non-warring point of view.

  48. Jarrad · 16 Aug 2005
    Wow wow, so many posts.
Anyone who remembers the good old days when I never got randomed bla bla either has selective amnesia or was very lucky. There have always been casualties of war and there always will.
As for this bullshit about enforcing clan titling etc etc gimme a break. Anyone who gives info away to their enemy is a moron in my opinion, stay unknown for as long as u can.
In regards to neutrals, the only real reason for zoning with clans is to log/learn zones. The only eq they ever receive from it is trash unwanted by said clan. Therefore use some common sense, don't zone with your main character, use ur 2nd or 3rd char that u don't care about or come straight out and talk to a member of the enemy clan straight after u zone and ensure that u are not highlighted.
On the other hand, 80% of neutrals who group with a clan are friends of some member of that clan and are being groomed for recruitment, and end up joining it, regardless of if they become hunted as result of said grouping. Being PK'd by that clans enemy just speeds the process up.
    Enuff rambling, bed time.

  50. Bedouin · 16 Aug 2005
Ok, so I'm titled BSP nice and proper. I'm not hurting anyone, I'm just zoning peacefully. All of a sudden, these 4 unhighlighted characters jump out of nowhere and whack me. I lose some really nice equipment, it might take me forever to get it back. All 4 obviously get highlighted.

A couple days later, im somewhat re-equipped, zoning peacefully as usual again. I see one of the (now known) evils running around with 3 other characters I've never seen before. No problem, maybe I should just be naive and assume the other 3 are not evil. Oops, they were evil after all. Maybe I shoulda highlighted them before they got my shinies again.

The fact is that people use 'unknown' chars for PK. If all the 25+ chars clearly stated their clan affiliation, the who command could help me decide if I wanna get the fuck out of dodge or stick around.

The fact is that nobody wants to lose hard-to-get equipment, and that chars seen grouping with known evils turn out to be evil as well in like 95% of the cases. Face it, very few players nowadays will group with people they dont know.

The XP loss at PK is a joke. I've got at least 15 deaths on my thief, only one of them from PK. I usually make up the normal death xp loss in roughly 30-45 minutes. On the other hand, that epic stabber of doom which I have, took a 10 man group almost 3 hours of a rough zone or roughly 30 man hours for a single piece of equipment. The whole game revolves around shinies anyway, so no way I'm letting the enemy have mine that easily!

Seriously, make sure nobody can learn the game. Force everybody to quit. Because then you'll own the game, and all shinies will belong to you.
