I think KoT got so use to pkilling Imperials that they got a little overenthusiastic going after Wild. You would think that after the first 2 attempts they would have stopped? Heh, all in good fun eh?

I like how none of the Wild tanks were hasted however all of the KoT/BSP tanks were... I guess you don't need hastes to win a pk eh?

I have a question totally unrelated to this topic.

Has anyone heard of a graphic online multiplayer game that is structured like Arctic?

What I mean is, there are a ton of multiplayer games like EverQuest, Diablo2, World of Warcraft, Planetside (not bad), and others. And all of them have some element of player killing available.

However, what most of them do is either have dedicated playerkilling servers with tons of stipulations, or they have stuff where realms fight against each other as in Dark Ages of Camelot. What I am looking for is a structure much like Arctic, where pretty much anyone can be killed, there are limited resources and spells, and while time put in determines success to a certain extent, much more important is the clan you associate with and your skill level. In that way, clans would war each other for supremacy to fight for the limited resources (ie, awesome EQ) and use strategy to maintain dominance. That (at least that's how it used to be) is how it is setup on Arctic. Limited resources, where players have to band together to succeed and often the two most powerful clans will be fighting each other. And much like arctic, there would be plans inherent to prevent the random killing of newbies (board system).

Has anyone heard of anything like this? I almost feel like going and pitching it to someone in the industry, because its so annoying that a system as sweet as that does not exist.

IMO, dark age of camelot has the best PvP system that works and that's RvR. Of course it's not arctic but it's extremely hard if not impossible to duplicate arctic's system on a graphical mmorpg and make it a financial success. None of the other mmorpg's really have a pvp system. A lot of old arctic players have or continue to play daoc until something better comes along but I doubt it'll be like arctic.

You don't think it would be feasible to have a system like arctic? Why not? All you have to do is allow for pkilling. Until the high levels, maybe you can't do it in towns. That keeps the newbs safe. Limit the number of accounts to keep minimal chars.

The problem with games like everquest is that the reward goes to the biggest losers. The fags who will spend 3 days camping a zone, or how it takes 40 days of playing time to reach the maximum level. Why does this have to be so? Make the challenge getting equipment and spells, not merely attaining a high level. And implement a system like our rank system. This would make clans and politics meaningful. As it is now, its much more individualistic and forgiving, with people basically logging on, doing a generic attack with their buddies, and logging off. No planning, no strategy, no politics or diplomacy, or any of the other games that make this realistic and worth playing.

PS. Is there a general arctic IRC room for people at work?

Software companies will never make a game like Arctic.
Both the PK system and the limite on the equipment will scare away too many potential buyers. A software company wants to make as much money as possible so all mmorpgs will be 'friendly' to the large gaming community. So a graphical version of Arctic will never exist unless some people make a Freeware version of it.

it's not so much that pk is conducted but rather HOW it's conducted; & there's just absolutely no way to transfer arctic's mechanics to a graphic medium.

The fact is games are constantly watered down as the years go by. Look how hard the original NES games and shit were compared to these modern games. As of July 29th Arctic will now switch over to a new keyword system. You have two options for working on a keyword, you can either find the clues, or simply type "solve" and all keywords for any given zone will immediately pop up on your screen. In addition to this, a "win" and "lose" command have also been added. The "win" command will have to be tested extensively, but it does exactly as its name indicates and makes you immediately win the game. The "lose" command is for wankers like Greer, and will make the user instantly lose Arctic. The "lose" command has also been tied to every possible telnet and MUD client around the world, and will make your computer eat your testicles for strength right before it implodes. These new features are installed to allow Arctic to be more competitive to other current games and give better access to newblets who cannot understand the complicated layering schemes used. Hopefully this change will bring back a large number graphical MMORPG users.

I'll mention just a few reasons why arctic can't be duplicated in graphic mmorgps without major design changes...

1) free 3d movement, no limit on rooms or areas, open wide area means you can't set workable artificial limits for zoning, fighting, etc. The whole arctic concept of fighting is based on no-movement combat, the mobile coding etc.

2) limit eq, decay rate, popping eq where everyone can just look at a website that gives you walk thrus, maps, step by step on how to get some item or kill some monster.

You can easily develop work arounds to that though and still have the core system in place. For instance, to duplicate the no-movement combat, maybe when someone attacks it forms a "combat zone" and anyone who runs into that zone is now in the "combat zone" which looks like a circle to those outside it. More people in it, larger the circle. When you're in there its basically like rpg round based combat, not nearly as gay, still more fluid and quick, but no one is moving behind each other, etc...

You can set decay timers, limit items, etc in a graphical game, etc... And if the stuff IS limit, then people probably won't put up websites, since that gives them power. Even if they do, they need to be able to do it, and having a larger staff would allow keywords and such to be changed more often.

I'm not saying that someone should do the equivalent of adding object based graphics to what arctic has, but rather make a game based on the same general principles that arctic is based on.

A graphical arctic-style mmorpg would blow. Unless you could make an awesome NWN mod, it'll never happen imo. Unless WotC/TSR/whatever, would decide to redo Dragonlance for 3rd ed, and re-make some of the old pc games and tales of the lance.

Not much chance in that though, since interplay(?) is currently working on Baldur's Gate 3 and NWN2.

Parn, yo might like some of the old-school online fan games people have made. Check byond.com, or do a google search, altho the few well-made DW/FF Nes-stlye online games I knew of that were in development aren't being done anymore (DWO (1.9)on byond, after playing the test of it, is just like the NES games, only multiplayer).
